Court Stenographer Job Profile and Description
Court Stenographers are those professionals who work during court hearings and proceedings thereby recording all the transcription of every event that takes place in the courtroom. The judicial officials depend on these court stenographers for the retrieval of the official information which is required in a number of cases. Some of these court stenographers even operate in the government events of special nature, recording every proceeding with great care. Court stenographers are mostly required when it comes to closed-captioned television typing purposes.
Court Stenographer Duties and Responsibilities
- Ensuring inclusive, precise, and protected legal proceedings of the court trials and hearings.
- Assisting the judges and attorneys in searching the information and preparing the record database of the court.
- Providing the authentic translating services for hard-of-hearing people.
- Creating and maintaining the computer dictionary which is then used for translating the keystroke codes in to text of written form.
- Editing the computer created translations in order to ensure that grammar and the identification of every fact is correctly used.
- Developing the procedures needed for the trouble-free storage and smooth retrieving of the stenographic notes, steno grams, voice files both in the digital and paper format.

Court Stenographer Education and Qualifications
- Diploma in a stenography course from a reputed college is highly essential.
- Certification in the licensure exams of the state stenography would be an added advantage.
Court Stenographer Salary
According to Payscale.com in July 2009, the median salary for a fresh court stenographer without experience is above $25,000 a year. However, their income would greatly vary depending on the nature of the government they work for and the experience of the professional.
