Dental Technician Job Description and Profile

A Dental technician, member of dental health team, provides back end office support and maintenance to the dentists. A dental technician construct and repairs dentures and dental appliances like bridges and crowns. They rarely interact with patients. They make models from mouth or teeth impressions of a patient. Most dental technicians prefer to specialize in areas like bridges and crowns, full dentures, partial dentures, ceramics, and orthodontic appliances. They work in private or public dentistry including dental laboratories, private dental practices, and hospitals.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Constructing various appliances like fixed and removable prosthesis including bridges, dentures, crowns and so on.
  • Working with different materials such as porcelain, wax, gold, stainless steel, and other metals.
  • Shaping and carving with tools like presses, lathes, drills, and high heat chambers for creating prosthetic device.
  • Making partial and full dentures for patients with their all or some missing teeth.
  • Making crowns to reconstruct root canal processed teeth and making veneers to enhance functions and aesthetics.
  • Using the digital or mold impression to prepare a plaster model or design of the mouth or teeth of patient.
  • Designing and creating prosthetic that fits perfectly within the mouth of patient.
  • Ensuring that the designed prosthetic exactly matches shape and color of the original tooth of patient.
  • Working with all materials executing all tooth replacement stages.

Skills and Specifications

  • Able to respond to demanding and complicated patient situations.
  • Effective communication with dentists as well as patients.
  • Maintain concise, timely and accurate confidential records of patients.
  • Good time management skills to balance the clinical and administrative duties.
  • Able to work very long hours, often under tight pressure.
  • Strong decision-making and practical skills.
  • Ability to develop dental appliances effectively.

Education and Qualifications

  • High school diploma in dental technology related field from a certified college.
  • Certification in Dental Technology from an accredited institution.
