The job profile of an insurance sales representative is similar to that of an insurance agent or an insurance broker. They sell insurance policies to individuals and companies by analysing their requirements and financial conditions. They may offer to sell policies like property and casualty, life, health, Ulips, mutual funds and other securities.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Insurance sales representatives identify potential customers and sell life, property, casualty, health, automotive, or other types of insurance to them

• They need to attend meetings and programs to learn about new products and services and get technical guidance in developing new accounts

• They need to calculate the premiums and establish the payment method with the customer

• They contact the policyholders to deliver and explain the rules and regulations of the policy, analyse the policy and discuss with them to make any changes in the scheme or beneficiaries

• They have to find out the customer’s requirements and customize the insurance policies to suit those needs

• They must develop marketing and sales strategies to compete with other agents from rival insurance firms

• They must make sure that all the policy requirements are fulfilled, like medical examinations or proper completion of forms

• They may have to inspect property, examine its condition to find out if it is a good insurance risk

• They interview prospective clients to obtain data about their financial resources, and physical conditions

• They need to maintain and update records and handle policy renewals

Skills and Specifications

• Insurance sales representatives must have very good communication and negotiation skills

• They must be hardworking and must be able to meet deadlines and targets

• They should be confident and good with numbers

Education and Qualifications

Insurance sales representatives usually have a bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, sales or business administration.
