Legal officer job description and profile
Legal officers are in charge of various legal aspects of the company ranging from fighting lawsuits on behalf of the company to overseeing merger deals and purchase of real estate. Their major duty and responsibility is to ensure that the company is not entangled in any sort of legal litigations by ensuring that legal procedures are followed and operations are within legal regulations. Legal officer reports to legal manager or chief legal officer.
Legal officer duties and responsibilities
- Reading and understanding various company contracts and deals and deciphering the legal jargon
- Providing useful inputs in formulation of deals and contracts
- In case of lawsuits, investigating cause of the litigation, collecting evidence that are permissible in the court of law and preparing all the groundwork required to fight the case
- Ensuring that all the licenses, agreements and permits of the company are valid and renewing legal contracts before it lapses
- Ensuring that all matters regarding tax are up to date
- Oversee all the legal implications of new projects
- Ensuring the safety of the company from legal litigations
- May have to train entry level legal officers and junior legal officers in company law procedures
- Ensuring documentation of all legal documents of the company in order to maintain confidentiality

- Excellent knowledge about all matters of law related to the field of work, which can range from corporate companies to non government organizations
- Excellent analytical and observation skills
- Excellent negotiation and communication skills
- Excellent decision making skills
- Good investigation capabilities
- Ability to work long hours
Legal officer education and qualification
- Bachelor’s degree in law followed by certification
- Internship of experience of work under senior lawyers is essential
Legal officer salary
- Salary of legal officers ranges between $120,000 to $180,000 with the national average being $160,000 per annum
