A medical secretary is someone who works for a doctor either in a clinic or a medical facility and has similar administrative responsibilities as any other secretary but in this case she requires some additional specialised knowledge about the medical field too so that she can do all the tasks properly and if required answer some queries from patients about the prescription, medicines, treatment, insurance details etc. The exact nature of her work will depend on where she is employed and what her employer asks her to do.

The duties and responsibilities of a medical secretary will involve:
- Take appointments from patients, greet them and answer any questions they may have
- Record their information and medical history and accept fee payment from them
- Answer phone calls, take messages, complete insurance forms and perform transcriptions from recordings

- A basic high school degree in necessary and one can also do a vocational course for medical secretaries
- She can also opt for an associate degree or diploma in learning about areas like medical terminologies, healthcare management, coding and billing, insurance etc
- Can get certified from The American Association of Medical Assistants but it is optional
