Ultrasound Technician Job Description and Profile

An Ultrasound Technician, under the direct supervision of Radiology manager, performs various technical procedures that require highly technical equipment. Ultrasound Technician’s main responsibility is to perform diagnostic ultrasound images, produce documentation, and share essential information with health care personnel in order to diagnose and monitor a variety of conditions such as cancer, heart disease, pregnancy.

Duties and Specifications

  • Performing ultrasound exams in small areas such as OB, abdominal, and vascular as prescribed by the physician.
  • Operating ultrasound equipment, selecting correct technical factors, exposing the film correctly to assure best quality.
  • Maintaining equipment upkeep with regular maintenance and reporting any malfunctions or failures to the manager.
  • Explaining procedure to patient, interviewing and obtaining patient history.
  • Providing nursing and technical aide to the Radiologist and physician during the performance.
  • Maintaining a safe, clean, and efficient work atmosphere in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Maintaining the room with adequate and necessary supplies and managing resources effectively.
  • Positioning patients properly using standards for the same and communicating effectively with health care professionals, nursing units, and others.
  • Developing and maintaining positive interpersonal relations with other department personnel.
  • Performing assessments on patients of various conditions and ages, considering the physical and physiological needs of every patient.
  • Recording and maintaining all records concerning the ultrasound exam, including jackets, pathology files, medical imaging requisitions, patient charts, and daily logs.
  • Maintaining quality levels that exceed or meet customer expectations and needs through a process improvement and team oriented approach.

Skills and Specifications

  • Knowledge of sterile techniques.
  • Knowledge of processes to obtain technically diagnostic ultrasound images.
  • Ability to operate equipment provided for obtaining highest quality ultrasound images.
  • Ability to manage complex work environment.
  • Effective communication and good interpersonal skills.

Education and Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited institution of Ultrasound technology.
  • Course completion in Ultrasound technology or has accomplished eligibility requirements for RDMS.
